A Toddy Shop That Does Everything Except Let You Leave Hungry


If you thought toddy shops were only about sipping toddy and getting on with your day… think again.

Because the one we visited near Palakkad — just a short, breezy drive from the Tamil Nadu border — flips that entire idea upside down.

Here, yes, you get cashew toddy, ginger toddy, and your classic plain toddy.
But alongside that?
You get a full-blown non-veg carnival happening right on your plate.
It’s like someone said, “Let’s serve toddy… but let’s also make sure nobody goes home without a food coma.”


We Walked in For a Light Meal… and Failed Miserably

We actually stepped in thinking, “Let’s have something light.”
Famous last words.

By the time we stepped out, we were seriously wondering if relocating near that shop would be a smarter life decision.
That’s the kind of emotional connection this food builds.




The Order That Started Innocently… and Escalated Quickly

We did the basics:
Parotta and Pathiri — the two heroes who always know how to start a story right.

And then came the supporting cast of side dishes:

  • Jilabe Fish Fry

  • Pork

  • Beef

A parade of flavours, textures, and surprises. Let me break it down…


Pork – The Undisputed Hero

If this meal was a blockbuster movie, the pork would have been the lead actor with a fanbase of its own.
Perfectly cooked, beautifully flavoured, and paired with parotta…
Pork + Parotta = a love story stronger than any Tamil movie climax.
This combo alone was worth the trip.


Fish Fry – Almost Perfect

The Jilabe fish fry came out looking like it was ready for its Instagram photoshoot.
Masalas? Excellent.
Freshness? Top-notch.
Flavour? Amazing.

The only tiny issue was a slight oil smell — just a little “hello” that could have been avoided.
But honestly, the taste still made us forgive everything.


Chicken 65 – Crispy, Soft, Perfect

Crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside — basically how all relationships should be.
The flavour was spot on, and we cleaned the plate without even realizing it.


Prawns – Simple, Peppery, Delicious

The prawns didn’t try to steal the show.
They stayed humble, flavourful, pepper-kissed, and truly enjoyable.
No complaints, only appreciation.


Beef – Tasty, but With a Twist

The beef was nicely peppery and full of flavour.
But… it came with a few surprise appearances from liver and intestine pieces —
the kind of “guest roles” nobody really asked for.
Still, the taste itself was solid and enjoyable.


Final Verdict

Even if you don’t go anywhere near toddy, this place is absolutely worth the drive just for the food.
The flavours hit hard, the dishes are heavenly, and the experience is something you’ll definitely remember.

You go in hungry,
You come out full, happy, and thinking about your next visit.

Right on the Coimbatore highway, the old Woodlands Restaurant spot has been completely transformed. The same owner has revamped it into something brand new — Relax Restobar, giving Karur a much-needed modern dining and chilling space.

If you remember Woodlands, you’d know it was a solid family restaurant. But now, it’s got a complete makeover — new interiors, ambient lighting, a classy bar setup, and a cool atmosphere that feels like a mix of highway dhaba vibes and city-style lounge comfort.


🍗 The Food Experience

The menu at Relax Restobar covers all the essentials you’d expect from a multi-cuisine restaurant — from Indian and Chinese to a few fusion dishes. Their signature items are the Elanir Chicken (tender coconut chicken) and Pineapple Chicken, which were crowd favorites back in the Woodlands days too.

Since I had already tried those before, this time we decided to switch things up. We ordered:

  • Chicken Biryani 🍛

  • Non-Veg Meals 🍱

  • Nallapatti Chicken 🌶️

  • Volcano Chicken 🌋


🍛 Chicken Biryani – The Star with a Surprise Twist

Let’s talk about the Chicken Biryani first — because this one deserves attention.
The biryani rice was perfectly cooked, bursting with aroma and balanced flavors. The masala wasn’t too spicy or oily — just right. Every spoonful felt comforting.

But, the chicken piece inside was slightly overcooked — like it had spent a bit too long training for a marathon 😅. Still, the surprise came in the form of a side of Eral Gravy (mutton liver).

And oh boy, that eral gravy was a total scene-stealer!
Rich, spicy, and full of that deep meaty flavor that just hits differently. It paired beautifully with the biryani and almost made me forget about the overcooked chicken. Definitely a winner! 👑




🌶️ Nallapatti Chicken – Spices That Stay With You

Next up, the Nallapatti Chicken. If you love strong masalas and local-style spice blends, this one’s for you. The dish had that perfect mix of heat and aroma, leaving a lingering spiciness that kept reminding us of how good it was long after the plate was empty.

Simple verdict — lip-smacking good! 🔥


🌋 Volcano Chicken – Sweet, Spicy, and Soft

With a name like Volcano Chicken, you’d expect something dramatic, and that’s exactly what we got.
This one had that Indo-Chinese twist — sweet and spicy sauce coating perfectly cooked chicken pieces that were surprisingly soft and juicy. The flavor balance was spot on, making it one of those dishes you keep reaching for again and again.


🍱 Non-Veg Meals – A Proper South Indian Combo

The non-veg meals came loaded with a little bit of everything:

  • Chicken Kulambu 🍗

  • Fish Kulambu 🐟

  • Boiled Egg 🥚

  • Omelette 🍳

  • Rasam 🍲

Everything tasted good and felt homely. I wouldn’t say it was out of this world, but definitely satisfying — a complete South Indian-style lunch that leaves you full and happy.

The ambiance is modern yet comfortable, with neat lighting and a relaxed feel — perfect for both families and groups of friends.

And yes, liquor is served 🍺.
If you’re coming with family, they serve it right at your table in the main dining area. If you’re coming as bachelors, they’ve got a separate section for dine-in with drinks. Thoughtful setup — keeps everyone comfortable!

Relax Restobar is definitely a refreshing addition to Karur’s food scene.
The food is flavorful, the service is friendly, and the whole vibe is just chill. Whether you’re coming for a proper meal, a drink, or just to hang out with friends, this place hits the mark.

Sure, a few dishes could use minor tweaks (looking at you, overcooked biryani chicken 👀), but overall it’s a solid experience.

Okay, guys, today I found something cool in Karur — a small local mess that serves 5 types of non-veg dishes with unlimited rice and kulambu... and all this for just 100 rupees! 😲


Now, usually you’ll see these kinds of combo offers in Salem or Tiruchengodu, but in Karur... this is the only spot doing it right now! 💪

The place isn’t fancy — no AC, no decorations, just a few tables and people happily attacking their meals 😂

So, my combo plate had fish fry, chicken chukka, chicken uppu kari, mutton blood poriyal, egg poriyal, and karuvaatu thokku — plus unlimited chicken kulambu, fish kulambu, and rasam. Combo keeps changing, so it’s like a foodie lottery every time 🎲🍛


Taste? Not bad! A bit more spice would’ve made it awesome 🌶️. The blood poriyal needs some improvement 🩸, but the karuvaatu thokku was a banger — perfect with rice and even with curd rice 😍.
And that chicken kulambu… chef’s kiss 👌

I’ve had better ₹100 combos in Salem and Tiruchengodu, but for Karur, this one’s totally worth it!

As I walked along, I spotted some food stalls selling prawn vada, crab, and fish. Not a huge variety, but hey — perfect for that “let’s eat something crunchy before dinner” mood.

Then came the main event — Aluthkade! I booked a PickMe (that’s basically Sri Lanka’s Uber) and zoomed off. It’s THE place for foodies — imagine an entire street that wakes up in the evening just to feed hungry people till sunrise. You’ll find everything — chicken BBQ, naan, biryani, burgers, submarines, sandwiches, juices — basically, food heaven with traffic!

I started simple — a sausage spiral on the go. Then came the eye-catcher — a cheese chicken burger with cheese served in a syringe! Looked like something out of a food science experiment. Taste-wise… meh. The bun was okay, the fried chicken was okay — basically, a good-looking average burger.

Then I tried a BBQ chicken leg with naan, salad, and mayo — and that combo was pure perfection 🔥 A total must-try if you’re there!
I had dreams of tasting the bamboo biryani, crab curry, prawn curry, and mutton too — but my stomach threw up the “no vacancy” sign. Still had a tiny spot left though… for a chilled Ice Milo! If you’re in Sri Lanka and don’t drink Ice Milo, you’re missing out. That cold, chocolatey magic was the perfect ending.

🍗 Trichy Food Hunt: My Adventures at Aara Mess

So, this time my food radar beeped in Trichy. And instead of going behind some air-conditioned “fine dining” palace where they charge you extra for tissues, I wanted something home-style. You know – the kind of food that feels like it’s cooked by a loving grandma… or at least by someone who knows what salt is.

Enter Aara Mess, a small little joint tucked away on TVS Tollgate Road. From outside, it looks like the kind of place where you’ll either discover hidden food gems… or hidden stomach problems. But hey, I’m brave.


                                        

Now here’s where the comedy starts. I opened the menu and realized it was basically a “missing persons list.” 🕵️‍♂️ No chicken dishes (seriously, a mess without chicken? That’s like a biryani without rice). And in the mutton section, the only survivors were intestine fry and liver fry. Great. Basically the parts of the goat even the goat didn’t want.

But foodies don’t back down. So I went all in and ordered:

  • Non-veg meals 🍛

  • Mutton intestine fry 🐐 (a.k.a. mutton’s revenge)

  • Vanjaram fish fry 🐟

  • Paal oori (Seela) fish fry 🐠

The non-veg meals were a pleasant surprise though – they came with two veg dishes (to trick you into thinking you’re being healthy), and a trio of gravies: mutton, fish, and chicken. The mutton gravy and fish gravy were solid, proper mess-style flavor bombs. The chicken gravy? Let’s just say it tasted like the cook made it while scrolling Instagram. 🥱

Now, let me talk about the hero of the day – the Nethili karuvadu thokku. My god! 🤯 Absolute game-changer. Spicy, tangy, bold – the kind of dish that makes you sweat, cry, and still want another bite. Honestly, you could walk into Aara Mess, order just this thokku with rice, and walk out a happy soul.

The mutton intestine fry was actually tasty, though the pieces were slightly bigger than I expected. Felt like I was chewing on goat cables. Still, flavor-wise, no complaints. The fish fries were excellent too – fresh, perfectly fried, and coated in that masala that whispers “homemade” with every bite.


So, what’s the verdict?
👉 Aara Mess is not for the menu explorers (because half the menu is MIA).
👉 But if you want simple, no-nonsense, home-style food with a couple of gems (hello thokku 👋), then this place is worth stopping by.

I walked out full, slightly amused, and already planning my next trip back – just for that karuvadu thokku.

Now, let’s talk stay. We booked ourselves into Pepper Nest Homestay – a 5-acre pepper farm with a house big enough for 15–20 people. Basically, you can bring your entire extended family, your neighbors, and maybe even your milkman, and there’s still space. 🏡 The setup: Main building → 2 double rooms downstairs, 3 double beds upstairs in a hall (extra beds? No problem). Separate container cabin → perfect for that one friend who snores like a tractor. Wooden & A-frame cabins → still under construction, so you can brag that you stayed there before it was cool. 🍽️ The dining area? Built on a platform with a killer view. And yes, there’s a campfire spot too – for when you want to roast marshmallows… or just gossip about your relatives.



👨‍🍳 Food? Oh boy. They have in-house cooks who whip up food just the way you like. Since there were 20 people, they even summoned a Biryani Specialist from outside. That’s right – a man whose sole life mission is making chicken biryani and dhalcha. Legend. 🙏 Lunch → Chicken biryani, chilli chicken & boiled eggs. Absolute food coma. Dinner → Chapatti + chicken curry = happiness on a plate. Breakfast → Idly, parotta, veg kurma, and mutton kulambu. Eating parotta with hot mutton kulambu in chilly weather? That’s not breakfast, that’s therapy. 🤤


Sure, there’s no fancy sightseeing or adventure sports here. But you know what? Sirumalai IS the activity. Mess In Annur 🍽️ Serving Hot Idlis 🥥 with Tasty Mutton Varuval 🍖 & Kudal...

Just a tiny mess with a big heart — Dharani Mess sits quietly on the Annur–Mettupalayam highway, just 2 km from Annur, feeding hungry souls with some seriously tasty mutton and kudal (intestine) curry every single day.
Sundays here are a festival for meat lovers — think mutton head curry, mutton brain fry, and country chicken joining the party. But I went on a weekday, so my luck wasn’t fully loaded — just mutton and kudal for me. Fewer dishes, but oh, the taste!
The kudal had that peppery punch that wakes you up better than coffee, and the mutton was soft, juicy, and bursting with flavor. Pairing them with hot, fluffy idlis? Pure heaven. The only heartbreak — no parotta here! And trust me, those curries with parotta would have been legendary.
