We were on our way to Dindigul for lunch when we spotted this place—Kovai Kochai Virunthu—on the way. And you know how it is… when a food place suddenly appears in front of you, plans can change very quickly! 😄 So, instead of continuing to Dindigul, we decided to stop here and see what this place had to offer. Located at Ayarmadam near Vedasandur on the Karur–Dindigul highway, this rustic, village-style eatery serves food cooked the old-fashioned way—in clay pots over a firewood stove.

The place has small huts and a simple, pleasant ambience. It definitely looked like a nice spot for a proper afternoon virundhu. For lunch, we started with their meals, which came with rice, Naatukoli Kulambu, and two varieties of rasam.
But obviously, we weren't going to stop there! 😄 For the side dishes, we ordered Naatukoli Pallipalayam, Naatukoli Chinthamani, Naatukoli Pacha Millagai, and Kaatu Varuval.

And because we apparently didn't order enough food already… we also got the Naatukoli Biryani! 😂 Now, coming to the food. The Naatukoli Pallipalayam was just average for us. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but it didn't really stand out. The Naatukoli Chinthamani was decent too. No complaints, but again, nothing that made us go, “Aha… this is the one!” But then came the Naatukoli Pacha Millagai and Kaatu Varuval — and these two completely changed the game! Both were excellent. The meat was cooked perfectly, the flavours were fresh and full of character, and the overall taste was simply outstanding. The owners had actually recommended these two as their signature dishes. And honestly, they weren't exaggerating. They really were the stars of the meal. The Naatukoli Thanni Kulambu was another highlight. It had a lovely flavour and went extremely well with the hot white rice. This is the kind of combination where you tell yourself, “Just one more handful of rice…” and suddenly the banana leaf is empty! 😄 The Naatukoli Biryani was good as well. They told us that they were trying it out for the first time, so considering that, it was quite good. There is definitely some room for improvement, but it was still enjoyable. Overall All in all, this turned out to be a fantastic meal and a very unexpected find on our way to Dindigul. The one thing that disappointed us a little was the price. They charge around ₹300 per plate/portion of Naatukoli, which I personally felt was slightly on the expensive side. And one more small point — the name says “Kochai”, but I wouldn't really describe these birds as kotchai kozhi. They are actually original Peruvedai country chickens. Despite the name ‘Kochai,’ these are not fighter roosters; they are traditional Peruvedai country chickens. But if you're travelling along the Karur–Dindigul highway and you're looking for something different from the usual highway food, this place is definitely worth stopping at. And if you do visit, don't miss their Pacha Millagai Chicken and Kaatu Varuval. Those two were the real heroes of this virundhu! 🔥🐓🍗 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
